My Lousy Sand



Well there goes another fall aeration! I wish I could say that it went off without a hitch but that just wouldn't be aeration at Pender Harbour.  Last year we purchased a back up aerator and it's a good thing we did because the old one tried to die a few times and the newer one wasn't much better.  Our topdresser also finally died and we could only finish spreading the sand thanks to the guys at the Porpoise Bay Golf Club in Sechelt for lending us their spreader.

Despite having one of the largest gravel and sand pits in the world only minutes away we have a very hard time getting a high quality sand.  They even advertise on their web site about how good their sand is for golf courses.  In order to get this sand though, you need to order an entire golf course's worth!

How to quantify nutrient content in liquid fertilizer

In a recent post, I discussed how it was actually cheaper to spray soluble vs granular fertilizer. What about if we use pre-mixed liquid fertilizer? How do we even figure out how much nutrient we are applying with pre-mixed liquid fertilizer?  Before I learned that you could simply dissolve soluble fertilizer in water and apply it in a sprayer, I was a big user of pre-mixed liquid fertilizers. One of the issues I initially had was figuring out exactly how much of each nutrient I was applying. The math wasn't as straightforward is it was with granular fertilizers. It turns out, it's actually not that difficult but requires an extra step.  First, we need to convert the liquid volume into a mass. Disease Update and Observations Jan 2013

GOT FUSARIUM? It would probably be an understatement to say that the fusarium activity levels are high these days. The above picture illustrates one of the more extreme attacks currently on my course. Last week while scouting for disease I made an interesting observation that I thought I would share. Typical tee disease levels, no pesticides of any kind ever, oh yeah, hasn't seen direct sun since Sept! As I only apply fungicides to my putting green surfaces there are varying levels of fusarium activity throughout the course but the areas that are hit the hardest are the approaches about 3m from the front of each green. In these areas the fusarium activity is extremely high.
